At the Borough markets in London stubbled chin men gnaw on fleshy burgers, females in ponchos pick at sizzled scallops, couples gather handfuls of caramelised nuts, chocolates and dried fruits, whilst quirky staff stand handing out smoothie and antipasto samples behind small stands.
The Borough Markets in London lie just beyond London Bridge, offering a great view of Tower Bridge. Behind an impressive cathedral they are given away as grungy types gather in clumps chomping into organic falafel wraps. By twelve, twelve-thirty there is little space to move so arrive early to survey your options for fruit, vegetables, wholesome bread and brownies.
This market has an organic tone but lacks in true taste. The barrelled cider is sweet and subtle but better in the Winter months when served warm. Earthy falafel wraps lack bite and flavour. The dolmades swim in oil, the chicken skewers are very dry and fruit and vegetables are pricey. Even the ‘world’s most famous brownie’ prized at the Borough markets is too cakey and rich. Whilst the other less famous varieties are ultra chewie and dense. Nonetheless, the combination of grunge and fresh produce in London city is worth the trip to the Borough Markets.
