Three meals in Melbourne

There is nothing like fitting a work trip around three great meals, so the location of meetings must be planned carefully around the availability of great restaurants.

A recent trip to Melbourne required especially sensitive planning, as the day was punctuated by meetings in Mulgrave, the city and Glen Iris.

Breakfast
The day started extra early so that I was prepared for the Goats Cheese Omelette and fresh orange juice at The European. It did not disappoint, and everything that is written and spoken about the European is true. Tucked away at the back of the room and looking forward through the tables I felt miles away from Melbourne, and more importantly they were more than accommodating of a sole diner. The omelette was fluffy with the goats cheese slowly melting through.

Lunch
After a detour to Mulgrave the day was back on track with a lunch meeting at Il Solito Posto. Forget about 15 Melbourne's desecration of the old door's to Momo opposite, and enter one of Melbourne's great Italian restaurants. I usually prefer to eat casually upstairs but today we found ourselves tucked away amongst some old bottles of red. The eye fillet was sensational, and with some sparkling water and roast potatoes I managed to forget that I was still working for a minute or two.

Anyway, it is a fantastic room downstairs at Il Solito Posto, and the food is exquisite.

Dinner
After a trip to Glen Iris, an email check and also a couple of hours to do some work it was time for dinner. Usually my days include a stroll around town to make a new discovery for morning or afternoon tea, but today it was straight to dinner. And so I found myself driving to the Argo Hotel to try one of Melbourne's newest gastropubs in one of the most difficult situations of all, a family dinner on a business trip. The company was great and the schnitzel reminded my compatriots of the great schnitzels of their lives. The beans and fetta were great and of course there were more roast potatoes.

We sat in the informal dining area and ate of the casual meal, but from all reports the formal dining room is fantastic.

All three places are highly recommended.
