If you want to take your partner on a date Happy Days style then you could visit one of those horrible Old Time burger joints. But if you want to get really sophisticated, then take your partner to Tolarno's for a great bar burger and an imported beer. You'll have much more fun, and the food is better.
Ian Hewitson has a designated seat on the bar, closest to the television, but apart from his presence there are usually seats at the bar, where you can enjoy some great pub food at decent prices. The crumbed mushrooms are fantastic as is anything with Hewi's homemade, extra-hot barbecue sauce. But the reason to return to Talarno's (apart from imbibimg a glass of port on a cold St. Kilda evening) is the burger.
The burger is held together by a satay skewer, such is the mass of ingredients that comprise this great Melbourne eating tradition. The bread is filled by an enormous, succulent, meat pattie, bacon, cheese, onion, betroot and special sauces. But it is much more than the sum of its ingredients. The staff, location and ambiance all add to the meal, as do the French Fries.
There is a dining room that is separate to the bar. Excellent food is served there, but it's the burger that I dream about.
