Yamato is tucked deep into Corrs Lane in Chinatown (Little Bourke St.). It is a cozy space occupied by a quaint whitewashed building that has the Age Cheap Eats Guide of 2001 gushing with clichés. Yamato is not dirt cheap, so being half-full is no disadvantage. The entrees are all quite good. The gyoza is delicious and the soups tasty. Almost everything comes in a ‘special dipping sauce’. Whether this sauce is the same for each dish is worthy of further investigation. The real treat at Yamato is the selection of sizzling mains. For around $13 these are fantastic. The quality of the beef is outstanding, the thin slices almost melt as they are devoured. Green tea ice cream is a good bet for desert. The décor and location are fantastic. The little pine benches may not suit those who push past six feet, but try it out. |
