Barcelona is already world-renowned for its architecture, fashion and industrial design, and its grand tradition of avant-garde artists. It is only recently, however, that the rest of the world has begun to realize that Catalonia is also both a gastronome’s and an oenophile’s heaven. With big names like Santi Santamaria, Carmen Ruscalleida, and the ubiquitous Ferran Adriá behind their respective three-Michelin-starred restaurants, it’s clear that Catalan cuisine has made its definitive arrival on the global scene. Catalan wine is having its own renaissance, with winemakers like Alvaro Palacios and José Luis Pérez producing some spectacular vintages in the Priorat region.
What most people, even wine connoisseurs and self-proclaimed foodies, don’t yet seem to understand is where exactly these exciting new chefs and their inspired ideas come from. Catalonia is a fascinating region whose distinctive cultural traditions have inspired generations of artists, writers, musicians, and, of course, chefs.
Esentia Tours, a small culinary travel agency based in Barcelona, offers travelers in Catalonia the chance for a truly authentic cultural experience. After all, what better way learn about a culture than through its food and wine?
We at Esentia believe in living, eating, and drinking consciously – with regard for the environment, the land, the ingredients, their cultivation and preparation by farmers and chefs, and the cultural symbolism of each meal. There is a story in every dish and every glass of wine. By reconnecting with the sources of local gastronomy and wine and experiencing firsthand the processes involved “from soil to table,” our guests gain a deeper insight into the culture as a whole.
I have attached our first recent press release, which will give you more details about Esentia Tours. I’ve also attached a press release with information about the upcoming Spain’s 10: Cocina de Vanguardia event at the new French Culinary Institute in New York, which features cooking lessons and demonstrations by top Spanish chefs, including Ferran Adrià, Martin Berasategui, and Juan Mari Arzak. We’re very excited that the FCI has chosen to focus on Spain for its inaugural event – a clear sign that Spanish cuisine is becoming increasingly popular around the world!
