Hamburg is a city of water - canals, boats and fish. Stroll along the shimmering Alster and try a tourist teasing Fishbrotchen. Choose a seafood type, from a selection of tempting options - herring, shrimps or salmon, as a filling within a crusty white bread roll. Bite into the bread and barely experience the fishy heart. Alas, such is often the way with must try national delicacies. Nevertheless it’s worth crunching into whilst staring out into the stunning water scene. Turn the other way and see the city centre of Hamburg; the ground is cobbled, the buildings are an elegant green and bronze and there is always a festival and a reason to celebrate. Neighbouring street stores sell other tourist enticing cuisine, curry wurst, Haribo lollies and naturally German beer.
Hamburg is a land of green gardens and picturesque picnic places. Planten and Blumen, the Japanese inspired garden, offers countless hideaways – in tea-houses or under willow trees. Pick up a variation of the ideal schwarzbrot/ or a kornneck-brotchen (black bread/ brown seed-full triangle shaped roll), from a nearby Bakery (fear not they line every street and corner). Buy one already filled with salad, cheese eggs and cold meat or create your own sandwich and enjoy it in the spot of your liking. Find inventive ways to make the most of the sun during a Hamburg Summer - with beach clubs, plentiful body exposure and idyllic ice cream. Some delightful ice-creameries run down Wohlwillstrasse in St. Pauli. Try milch-blume (milk flower), zimt (cinnamon) or rotepampelmousse (red grapefruit) – and who knows what exotic creature you will morph into on a hot afternoon.
Cafes, youthfulness, chai, yogi tees and generally beautiful things are abundant here. The streets of the Schanze, St. Pauli’s and the Reeperbahn buzz with atmosphere. Absorb the imaginative use of wallpaper, lighting and experimental WC’s in some favourites in the Schanzenviertel region. Experience the sounds of the female toilets and play with the interactive fishbowl at ‘The Golden Fishbowl’. Recline in comfy coaches under emerald green lamps to view the art in ‘Cafe Juli’ or simply enjoy the good food, drink and friendly staff at the unbeatable ‘Mangold’. Garlic butter is always a gift with your complimentary bread, and a chocolate or biscuit is guaranteed with your milchkaffee.
Hamburg is a multicultural hotspot. During the World Cup 2006, TVs and plasma screens in every chic cafe, house, restaurant, bar and pub attracted stupendous crowds. Every apartment window waved a flag of some sort – signalling the diverse food available here. A city heavily inspired by the expansive Turkish, Italian, Portuguese and Indian populations, and also by the ever inspiring Japanese, creating a colourful combination of food, people and cultures. Walk along the vibrant Schanzenstrasse and take your pick of tapas, pasta, curry or a bento box. Enjoy the outside seating in summer, or the cosy interiors during winter. Regardless of the season, expect quality cuisine.
On Sunday mornings head down to the Elbe waterfront for the weekly Fischmarkt. Bargain deals on fresh fish, fruit, veg and chocolate assortments will go down nicely with your friends and family. Snack on honey coated almonds as you survey the going prices on pineapples, apricots and avocados. Pick up a fruit and veg hamper or a chocolate mix show-bag if you feel like sharing your Sunday morning joy. Complete a perfect night out on the Reeperbahn by beating your pumping headache with an early morning/late night fischbrotchen. It’ll taste better under these conditions – and are rumoured to be more satisfying on this waterfront.
Hamburg both on water, and on land, on beach and in park, in café and in pub will offer you an intoxicating experience for all your awaiting senses.
