Feelin' Foodie

Fremantle Restaurants and Food

After spending a week or so in Fremantle talking to locals, obdserving tourists and letting life slip while eating heartily Feelin' Foodie has come up with some recommendations of where to eating while in Fremantle.

Starting on a Saturday morning at the Fremantle Markets is a good place to begin, even though the markets hardly rate compared to their eastern neighbours. But the markets do give a sense of the culinary scene of Fremantle and provide a cultural insight into the region. Follow the markets with a walk along South Terrace stopping at Gino's, Capri or Benny's Bar & Cafe. Gino's is particularly busy and offers incredibly hearty meals. The Italian food in Fremantle is excellent and fairly reasonable and Gino's is a great place to experience the Fremantle atmosphere while eating good quality Italian food.

Follow Gino's with a visit to Amano Gelato or keep walking towards the train station stopping at the organic grocer or one of the many small cafe's popping up.

After a break go to Sandrino Cafe & Pizzeria, Sala Thai or Ruocco's. Or for the more adventurous (or those with wheels) continue along South Terrace to Falduzzi's Pizza Cafe where there will be crowds of people waiting for the modern Australian food with heavy Italian influences. After the meal at Falduzzi's revist Amano Gelato, or if it is a busy Saturday night choose between the Norfolk Hotel and Little Creatures. If there is sport on then favour the Norfolk, otherwise Little Creatures offers great beer, fantastic pub food and an unbeatable atmosphere. Kailis' Fish Market Cafe is a great place for fish and chips in summer.

If you have any time remaining visit Aubergine for breakfast and then follow up with a visit to The Essex or Joy Kitchen. The Bengal Indian Restaurant is well patronised and is next to a busy backpackers. It is probably the best backpacker option along with the weekend Fremantle Markets.

The food in Fremantle is great, the ingredients all quite fresh considering the isolation of Perth and the greater Perth region and the prices moderate for such a touristy area. It is not a cheap eaters heaven but is welcome relief for deprived foodies. The attractive surrounds and easy buildings make Fremantle an obvious candidate for further foodie excitements which we will watch over time.
