Willunga and McLaren Vale demands serious attention from every foodie in Australia. If Willunga had slipped under the foodie radar over the years, the rise of the Willunga Farmers Market and of Russell's Pizza has had the same impact as the establishment of Saloppian Inn, the McLaren Vale wines and the Coriole Winery.
You can spend a week sampling of the produce, cafes and restaurants. Because there are a few that simply demand return visits. Start in McLaren Vale. Visit Awganix, Blessed Cheese (they offer packages, food parcels and winery advice), Market 190 (especially for the antipasto and the cheese), Medlow Confectionery & FruChocs Showcase, Red Pole and The Almond Train Carriage Café. Sit and chat at any of these establishments. They love a chat and can offer some advice of what wineries to visit.
If you are a foodie there is only one choice. Coriole Winery. I will let the review do justice to this fantastic winery. Other options are d'Arenberg, Noon Winery or Tatachilla Winery. But ask around McLaren Vale for what is good at the moment. Blessed Cheese or Market 190 are probably the best places to ask.
At night (or for lunch if you want to leave the vineyards) visit Saloppian Inn. It is always worth a visit.
If it is a Saturday move on to Willunga for the Willunga Farmers Markets. The amount of quality produce, snacks, home cooking and good feeling is extraordinary. And then there are the tarts.
There is Russell's Pizza, Sonnenschein Cafe, the Willy Hill Café, Piccolo Espresso, the Willunga Hotel and the Alma Hotel. If you are hungry during the day there is even the Willunga Bakery. Spend a week eating and drinking in the area, but make sure that it is Saturday to Saturday so you get two trips to the Willunga Farmers Markets.
