One of the highlights of eating in Mexico City, Contramar is a lunch-only seafood restaurant that is packed every day. Get there around 1.30pm to make sure there is a table for you, or at 5pm as the lunch time crowd leaves, as Contramar is only open from 1-6pm. The atmosphere is sensational. The business crowd rolls in during the week and families on the weekend. It is always busy and a great room to sit and eat in.
I've been a regular at Contramar for over a year and can vouch for every dish. The special fish - have both the green and red is great, as are all the varieties of tostadas - especially the octopus and chipotle. The soups are hearty and excellent, the green salad revitalising but it is seafood that is the go here.
Mussels, marlin, tuna (all the raw tuna dishes are wonderful), octopus, crab (have the soft shelled crab please), different fishes and everything else.
The only drawback are the occasionally overzealous waiters who bring the dishes in no obvious order. So it may pay to order one by one.
I haven't had much experience with the main fish meals as usually I've order 8 starters and then a fish to share.
One final tip. Order the fig pie for dessert. Please.
