The ride from city into south eastern suburbs can be tiring when it's windy, dark and dinner time.
By St.kilda your soul and body are broken - what better alternative than to jump off your bike and regroup via a quick drink and bite at Pelican.
The attentive staff quickly find you an outdoor table and get you a drink. You down your bloody mary pronto - surely this will help your legs make those extra few km. A cucumber stick is quite refreshing and more filling than your standard celery. The drink is spicy and you feel alive again.
MMmmm what to order? As you are bout to jump back on your bike - you decline the waiter's kangaroo suggestion. You favour the brocollini in soy and chilli and toss up between the bulgarian fetta fritters or the saganaki and lemon. The waiter firmly pushes you in the saganaki path, apparently whereas the fetta dish is quite heavy the saganaki 'cuts through the broccolini' masterfully. He reassures you that you don't need a sardine and for this you are thankful.
The meal is perfecto, arriving in swift timing despite the buzzing scene and you are up and out of there and within moments - back on your bike - rushing through the wind and the darkness. The spiciness, lightness and sweet saltiness kicking you past the tiredness, or is it the reciting and visualising of future pelican breakfasts and main meals that allow the final km to pass so pleasantly.
