Acland Cakes

One of four remaining Acland Street cake shops, Acland Cakes has formed part of the St. Kilda, European culinary institution for many years.

Acland Cakes serves many delicious cakes and biscuits, all available for perusal in the shopfront. Favourites are the baked cheese cake, the baci and chocolate kugelhopf. There is nothing like a Sunday afternoon spent on Acland Street, breakfast at Leroy or Benedykt, book browsing at Cosmos (no longer at Metropolis), and then a cake at Monarch, Le Bon Cake Shop or Acland Cakes. While the coffee is not up to the exacting standards of modern Australians, the atmosphere makes a visit worthwhile.

There is almost a feeling that the cake shops are inextricably linked with Luna Park. No matter how much nostalgia one feels their insides show their age. The fight may continue for years, but one day the shutters will be drawn on this former immigrant haven. And St. Kilda will be the poorer for it.
