A Brighton favourite, Ah' Loys serves a standard Malaysian menu without the inspiration. The food is decent, but nothing to rave about. The service is friendly but that is not why foodie eats out. The take-away business appears strong, and the restaurant is busy.
The laksa is good, but while there is not enough broth, bean curd or meat there is ample noodles and bean shoots. This is an irritating characteristic of many laksas. The bowls were not particularly deep (or maybe I was especially hungry). Additional ingredients, for example vegetarian laksa with prawn, were especially pricey.
The standard Malaysian dishes are prepared with care, and are reliably tasty, but the entrees are limiting.
