Aviv serves Melbourne’s best boiled bagels. They are around 50 cents, light, fresh and delightful. Make sure you plan a visit before midday to ensure that stock is plentiful, although the production line continues to increase to satisfy demand. Aviv, meaning ‘spring’ in Hebrew, continues to blossom (a rare pun) in a business and culinary sense. According to the SBS eating Guide to Melbourne 1997, the Polish, German, Yiddish and Hebrew teams all love it, as does Marcus Moore, executive chef at Le Restaurant, who favours the sweetmeats (according to Paul Best "Shopping for ideas" - The Age, October 29 2002).
The beauty of Aviv is not limited to tender bagels, tasty sweets and superior pastries. The patrons create an enviable atmosphere. Before the ticketing system the place was a dysfunctional riot. Things have calmed down now, but sitting with a coffee on a Sunday morning remains pleasurable, if only to observe the misbehaving throng.
Apart from the bagels (Katya Kiwitter’s favourite), the cakes and pastries set Aviv apart. The Israeli Kugeloph, a ring-shaped cake baked with flaky pastry swirled with a rich chocolate, is the best in Melbourne. Unlike much Kugeloph or Babka, the pastry is rarely dry. It is the most delicious I have ever tasted, and the most consistently deliciuous also.
The sumptuous pastries are the final treat worth mentioning. The donuts and almond horse-shoes and cheese danish and apple danish and almond scrolls and apricot danish are all too tempting. The mini-babkas are incredible. Take a tram or train to Glenhuntly Road and pay Aviv a visit.

Introduced to Aviv when I stayed over at a family friend's place. Had breakfast there, wow! Such a lovely bakery, we ended up buying practically the whole place to take home to friends. I even ended up going back the morning of my flight back home to buy some goodies for my family in NZ!
