Indian has hit Glen Eira Road and the locals go crazy for the fresh, flavoursome curries at Bala Da Dhaba. Good Indian is an important variable for the modern house-hunter, and those living near Ripponlea must be grateful that such a restaurant is close by. The malai kofta is enormous and delicious, be careful not to over order. The samosas are huge and many a light eater has been knocked out by entrée. Unfortunately the gluttons cannot fully capitalise, the curries are too big, but they taste even better heated up the following day.
Bala Da Dhaba is always packed. The décor is perplexing, but the lively atmosphere, especially on a Saturday night, makes it an exciting venue. On one occasion four parties were celebrating birthdays on the same evening. A poor waiter had to forgo customers to crouch over the CD Player and pump out a birthday track worthy of the Simpson’s episode where the robot band recognise Bart with the multi-gender epic ‘You’re the birthday, You’re the birthday, You’re the birthday, Boy or Girl’.
Sweet memories aside, Bala Da Dhaba serves huge, moderately priced Indian meals. While the makhani and the mango lassi are a little sickly sweet go back for the malai kofta or dish number 29 (its lamb).
