In early 2003 Bimbo Deluxe was the hot new venue on Brunswick Street. But my interest was piqued by the Pizza deals on a Sunday night, or during weekday lunches. $5 for a pizza is a bargain, but when the pizzas have ingredients like gorgonzola and prosciutto $5 is pittance.
Some friends were assembled and a trip to Bimbo Deluxe was arranged. I gathered that the point was to eat as many pizzas as possible, but discovered I was only in this practice. Anyway, the pizzas were good, although some were sickly. The spicy lamb was the best. Seconds was essential. The gorgonzola overpowered the prosciutto, and was applied too thickly regardless. Other pizzas suffered from this malaise. Subtlety was often lacking, but at $5 that is unimportant.
The dessert pizzas were tiny and (at $5) represented less value than the mains. The dessert pizzas at I Carusi are still unsurpassed. Bimbo Deluxe is a decent treat, and a funky bar, but make sure you visit when the pizzas are cheap.
