Breakfast here is surprisingly diverse and enjoyable despite fears and rumours of the horrific typical English breakfast. Yes there are plenty of sausages, baked beans, bacon and eggs -poached or scrambled. Add a couple of pieces of white toast and eat up like the abundance of Californians as though you were eating breakfast, lunch and dinner all at once. But there is also soda bread (made from very soft Irish flour and buttermilk), potatoe bread (thin bread made from spuds), tomatoes and vegetarian sausages for those who don’t favour meat. Choose from home made wholesome porridge, bio yoghurt (with flavours as exotic as rhubarb) and the varied selection of cereals. Grab the soya yoghurt while it's there - because chances are it won't be there tomorrow.Teamed with apples and oranges these latter options offer an appreciated break for our battling arteries. Orange juice is available as is your standard tea and coffee.
Is fun living out the daily tray and tong routine – feel I’m yet to get the hang of it…it took me a good 40 seconds before I realised the man behind the eggs was asking for his tongs back. If your really struggling with the pound here in Belfast - grab an egg and tomatoe sandwich to go. Always easy to nick a couple pieces of fruit, yoghurt and a box of cereal. I suggest you eat the beans then and there. Waking up here is always a treat.
Stay at Elms Halls of Residence at Queen's University Belfast and enjoy the included buffet breakfast every morning from 8am to 9am - til 10am during the week.
