A year ago Bubble Tea hit Melbourne. It slowly built, with the product a $3 artificially flavoured tea filled with pearls inspired by the increasing number of international students with high disposable income. Bubble Tea allegedly originated in Singapore, and while the craze has died down somewhat there, the expertise has been ported into the southern hemisphere. Bubble Tea is strangely addictive (although this might have something to do with the ingredients) and tasty given its artificial powder basis. And the combinations are baffling and intriguing. Will a mango snow shake with mango jelly taste as good as mango iced tea with pearls? There is red bean iced tea, green tea and as many artificial fruit flavours as you care to name.
