David’s, semi fine-dining on Cecil Place, just off Chapel Street, is a dignified Chinese restaurant with a good menu, great food and great service. While not as cheap as many foodie favourites, David’s is a great location for a special occasion. This particular special occasion was a family birthday and we were attended to by very welcoming and helpful staff who freely discussed the menu and its possibilities, shared tips and ensured that while the service was encompassing it do not consume or detract from the focus of the meal, which was to enjoy the a family gathering.
The banquet avoided, rounds of Dumplings, Soup, Peking Duck and San Choi Bao were all fantastic. Each dish was crafted finely and well presented, and although not perfect, lofty standards were met and exceeded. While the soups were collectively disappointing the mains were varied. The Mongolian beef and the Asian Steamed Greens were outstanding, but the Five Spice Calamari and the Bean Curd with Plum sauce were both a little bland. The beauty of David’s was a combination of service, craftsmanship and flavour. The flavours of each dish are vividly, deliciously, imprinted upon my memory, something that does not occur when great dishes are served in less comforting surrounds.
David Zhou sells teas and an emphasis on health and vitality of each dish is presented in the form of brief explanations on the menu. The Shanghai yum-cha on weekends is very popular.
