Famous for its cake shops and European influence, Acland Street is slowing becoming a culinary wasteland. Founded by migrants and epicurians, the cake shops are burdened by rent hikes they partly caused. This is a cycle in which they are trapped, as the cake shops now must focus on profit margins rather than quality produce. It is a shame, but every tourist guide book says to visit the cake shops on Acland St. The cakes often appear to be refrigerated and the prices are expensive. Two pastries and two hot chocolates for twenty dollars is steep for this reviewer. While Europa remains the superior cake shop on the street, its lifespan as a quality cakerie limited.
I have one other gripe. Often there are three or four cakes that are all appealing, but they appear too rich for a large slice, or too expensive to order them all. Couldn't Europa and its Acland Street friends offer smaller, "sample size" portions for those who cannot choose? Brunetti in Elgin Street, Carlton, offers mini mignon, éclairs, tarts, cakes, chocolates and canola. Europa should do the same.
