Guru Da Dhaba

Guru Da Dhaba claims to be Victoria’s first Dhaba house, an Indian foodstall which sells simple, hawker style food from fresh ingredients. The food on Johnston Street is so good, my mouth is watering for India. The curries are exquisitely crafted, bursting with spice and flavour, but do not overpower the palate. The tandoori chicken is supposed to be a speciality, but I have not yet tried it. Lamb, eggplant and chicken are all represented by dishes of which most restaurants daren’t dream. The Baigan Bharta comes highly recommended by the Foodie and the Age Cheap Eats team. It is an eggplant dish with ginger, garlic and garam masala. The Malai Kofta is excellent, as is the Gosht Sadabahar. The other regular highlight is the Chicken Makhani.

Guru Da Dhaba is not a one-hit wonder. The food is consistently good, the staff consistently friendly and the experience increasingly satisfying.
