Gus's Cafe

Instead of heading downstairs to the restuarant for breakfast, I faced the cold in my sandals and a dirty jumper. Walking downtown in the icy wind with an hour to spare before a day of meetings I watched the suited public servants busy by. Strange for a foodie to be spotting politicians rather than celebrities in cafes or on footpaths.

Anyway Gus's Cafe beckoned me. I remember the fresh apple pie and incredible iced coffee from a previous roadtrip. And so I ducked out of the cold and into a beautiful old room to be greeted by a group of Commonwealth Government employees laughing about graduate students and how nobody understands anything about Central Australia. Starting to feel more at home, because all Centralian's talk about is how public servants don't understand Central Australia, I ordered the Spanish Omlette and a fruit juice.

The juice was great. A treat for this deprived juicaholic. And the omlette was quite good. The sausage was a little disappointing and there was a lack of potato, but the return visit was more than worthwhile for the clientele, the room, the atmosphere and of course the food.

I will return to Gus's Cafe for the apple pie.

Mietta's Review
Gus's Cafe Sit inside or out in the now plastic wrapped pavement area and watch people cruise on by. One of the very first European style cafes in Australia and the first with footpath seating in the nation's capital. Tasty food, licensed and great coffee. A Canberra institution.
