i Carusi

i Carusi, an inspiration to Melbourne foodies, and an aberration to the local pizza takeaway. Foodie is no pizza expert, but the subtle flavours, thin base and abundance of prosciutto are overwhelming.

I had heard rumours of great pizza at the end of Lygon Street, so I stocked the car with snacks, and set off with some eating companions to find this mystical eating Mecca. We passed the McDonalds on Lygon 15 times, and briefly considered swapping pizza for a Quarter Pounder until commonsense led Foodie to the phone book. An extensive search confirmed that i Carusi was located on Holmes Street, the continuation of Lygon. Even with the address the restaurant proved difficult to spot. From outside the lights appeared dim and signage nonexistent.

Too often these reviews leap into hyperbole. To describe i Carusi in another vein would be pointless. The restaurant is moderately decorated, with the lighting and white interior underlying a regularly lively atmosphere. It is impossible to dislike; a place where one appreciates the ambiance, the restaurant becomes a real part of the evening.

I have made several trips to i Carusi, each time ordering a different meal, although my weakness for prosciutto has jeopardised a holistic analysis of the menu. The pizzas are immensely flavoursome and the ingredients are fresh. Foodie and friends recommend the Funghi Porcini, Genovese and Romana. The Belgian Dark Chocolate and pear Pizzette Dolci is a perfect way to prolong the evening. Order another if you still don’t want to leave.
