At a lose end during swotvac, I asked a housemate for some advice on breakfasts around the area. Without a question she listed three places, Rays, Small Block and ici. I had passed ici on a couple of occasions and never too much about it, but on her word I made my way against the stream up Brunswick Street to sample the breakfast at ici.
The specials menu did look quite special, especially the french toast, so a friend and I ordered eggs, bacon and toast and french toast with mixed summer berries and mascapone cheese as well as a couple of coffees. The interior is a little cramped but after my knees had adjusted and I had wriggled into position we settled down to a Saturday morning to be consumed by the oversized Age, with some pleasentries (or commentaries) exchanged. First the coffee arrived. Perfect soy latte according to the latte quaffer and a fantastic long black. Coffees and papers balanced on our knees, it was time to get stuck into the breakfast. And this is where I will remain grateful to this somewhat scattered housemate. The french toast was deserving of capitals. The eggs remain some of Melbourne's creamiest and this little, hidden, cafe is a perfect place to pass a rainy Melbourne summer (or winter) morning.
The food during the day is fresh and tasty. But the french toast is a reason to find regular employment on Brunswick Street.
