Joy Garden Seafood Restaurant is a highly reputable restaurant in the Northbridge "underworld". The print media and Perth foodies all recommend the fresh seafood, but return for the influence of Phyllis Cheung, who stands over the table and commands the diners.
The decor is seedy but the large numbers of Chinese diners and smell help to overcome any foodie fear.
We began with a duck soup with rice noodles, which was excellent.
This was followed by Phyllis Cheung's other recommendations. She dictated that we do not over-order and recommended Joy Garden Seafood Restaurant's special venison, chinese brocoli with rice wine and a seafood hot pot. The hot pot was a little too starchy but the venison reminded me of the finest creations of the Pacific House kitchen, and the greens were a welcome relief. We were sufficient, but there was always room for dessert.
For dessert we shared some almond jellly, sago pudding and green bean soup.
A very nice meal, some excellent advice and Joy Garden Seafood Restaurant remains recommended for Chinese food in Perth.
