Great, cheap Japanese food. The way real foodie dining should be. What Matsuya's may lack in authentic Japanese dining it makes up for in good dishes, fresh ingredients and a lively atmosphere.
There is nothing pretentious about Matsuya Japanese Restaurant. On Station Street in Fairfield it is a quick walk from the train station into a small suburban eating strip. And one of the places just happens to serve some of high quality, inexpensive Japanese food.
The sushi boat is a great way to start. Sushi and sashimi to share are both high quality. While not top of the range the price of the sushi boat would not break a uni students' budget.
The gyoza, eggplant and miso are all excellent choices for entree. But it is difficult to go wrong. In our two visits within the week we tried 8 entrees and all were great.
Follow up entree and sushi with a selection of main. The tonkatsu is fantastic, the tempura is good (but not the highlight) and kaki anything is fine by me. Once again it is difficult to question Matsuya's menu or quality for this kind of dining.
Don't visit expecting traditional Japanese customs and food practices to be transported from Tokyo to Fairfield. Visit a busy inner-city shopping and eating strip to eat good food, cheaply with friends in a very busy and jovial environment. And you won't be disappointed.
