No 44 King Street

One of the most hyped eating houses in Perth, No 44 King Street is right in the business heart of town. It was busy all day serving great coffee and wine, although the tea was disappointing.

The first adventure at No 44 King Street was for a working lunch. I felt like a roll of some sort, perhaps distressed from a traumatic eating experience at the Sandcastle Organic Cafe, where I just couldn't get my order right. I would have been better off at home that night, and probably during this lunch.

I passed on the laksa and went for the duck in aniseed. It was a salad (unexpected, perhaps I was too tired to read), it was sickly sweet (blame the aniseed, not my favourite) and the pieces of meat were sparse and crispy. The laksa was good and come to $13 with the duck in the mid 20 dollar range. The room is fantastic, the atmosphere incredibly boisterous for a Wednesday lunchtime, but the menu just did not appeal.

It could have been the number of consecutive days away from home, who can be sure?

So I got on the internet that night.

"It's great to be able to see the bakery in action, the sacks of flour piled up and the big mixers. Tempting displays of cakes and a daily changing menu asure that even the most assidous of regular customers here ca't get bored. And, there are many regulars of this Perth institution. Weekends are for families and Sunday is particularly busy." says Miettas.

The Gourmet Traveller disagreed. "Now 44 King Street has a lot more competition and, although it's still a robust veteran player, shows some signs of tiredness, and the once-novel industrial-warehouse feel seems ready for a nip and tuck."

Previous reviews talk of being dazzled, surprised, amazed and delighted.

So I returned the next day with an entourage and an aim. To get to the bottom of the No 44 King Street saga. The fruit salad was ordinary. The rockmelons were not fresh. The fruit juice was great. But the highlight of the breakfast was the fruit toast. The fruit was fantastic and the toast also contained a variety of nuts. It was a reason to return.
