I imagine that the Wheeler's, Tony and Maureen, founders of Lonely Planet, would love a place like the Pink Roadhouse at Oodnadatta. There is a certain irreverance about their story and lifestyle that suits the "Go out and explore, and if you get lost, ask" approach to travel. I won't fill up space with stories from the Roadhouse, go and visit.
Oodnadatta is a stranger place than its name suggests. And it is in the middle of a strange area, north of Lake Eyre and East of Coober Pedy. The Pink Roadhouse does what it can to add to the quirkiness of the bush, but it does so with a fair amount of practicality added in. Their maps of the Oodnadatta Track are essential for anybody considering the drive, especially people stupid enough to do it in a conventional vehicle. The Roadhouse has a series of fascinating books about the early history of Oodnadatta, which used to be a train station on the old Ghan.
But this is a food review site. Try the curried egg sandwich. It's excellent. So are the hamburgers. And if you are flying through Oodnadatta after a trip in the Simpson Desert a cold drink and an ice cream never seemed so welcome.
