Towards the end of a meeting with the Office of Indigenous Policy Coordination, my stomach raised the possibility of a quick lunch on the way to another meeting with the Department of Education, Science and Technology. Although we had to drive from Woden back to town, the Silo Bakery looked like it was just on the way.
Fresh from breakfast at Pizzaz we sped along the Canberra roads until we reached the busy Kingston at lunchtime. Packed with yuppies Silo was bursting at 12.30pm. Typical quality European bakery, the food is understated and simple, yet incredibly tasty. Silo "bread is produced with long, cool fermentation resulting in more complex flavours. The styles include the Silo sourdough (a light rye), Kingston sourdough (white), vollkornbrot, baguette and two Italian style breads, the casalinga and stirato" from the Silo website.
I sampled the sausage rolls which were average, and the ham and cheese roll which was incredible. The other selection was the vanilla brulee tart which was equally incredible.
Mietta's Review
Silo's the favourite spot for locals in the ACT. High quality breads and pastries are made in this award winning bakery. Sold direct to the public, the goodies are also available to eat in, and they feature on the breakfast and lunch menus. Silo also has a walk in cheese room, with an excellent selection of cheeses. Always busy. Many regard this as Canberra's best cafe.
