Small Block

This corner cafe is good, definitely worth a try. Last Sunday at 10 am the place was absolutely full, with several groups patiently waiting for tables. We were kept informed of progress, treated fairly and seated without too much delay. The place is noisy, with concrete floors, and busy. The coffee, Coffee Supreme, is powerful and very well prepared. Rice pudding with berries ($6.50) was a pleasing alternative to porridge. I'm a porridge addict, so that's a big statement. It was creamy, not overly sweet and the consistency was just right. My companion ordered parmesan French toast with prusciutto and chilli jam (10.50). She left a slice to me - very fine I thought, savoury and the parmesan, egg, prusciutto and bread working beautifully together.

I returned today for lunch, taking the tram from St Kilda. I sat outside, around the corner from Lygon St, in glorious Melbourne mid-winter sunshine. The coffee was just as good this time, maybe better than Sunday. Tim, the barista, is a craftsman and a huge Coffee Supreme fan. There weren't too many people, it was relaxed and easy to linger over a couple of glasses of coffee. The pumpkin soup ($6.50) was made in a Thai fashion, with chilli. The texture though was what I like in pumpkin soup, thick enough, and it was garnished in chilli oil.

I recommend a side trip to Sugardough, just over the road, at 163 Lygon St East Brunswick (03 93804080) for very fine pastries to complement the Small Block meal. And if you have time, take the tram up Lygon St to Moreland Rd and pay a visit to the Genovese Coffee Retail Shop at 51 Moreland Rd and watch the apprentice baristas in training.
