Stalactites was Melbourne’s first 24 hour restaurant when it was opened in 1978 by Nondas and Maria Konstas. I have not eaten at the restaurant itself, although I have frequented the takeaway section on many evenings when souvlaki or moussaka or a bag of great chips is the last stop before bed.
The souvlaki is good and the chicken especially salty and tasty. Sometimes I desire sauces apart from the Stalactites offerings of tzatziki and garlic, but whenever the souvlaki has been served I am grateful for such simple, quick food late at night.
Hang around and check out the late night crowd. During the Australian Open you might even spot Marcos Baghdatis.
