Super Bowl Chinese Restaurant is one of those places that Melbourne foodies love to find on the road. It is comforting, busy, full of Asians and serves good, cheap food.
There is nothing pretentious about the restaurant. The fish tank is an afterthought, and the poor decor and sparse room causes just enough uncertaintity to warn away the riff raff.
After going through the menu at length, and spying on the other patrons to see their favourite dishes, we decided to give the menu a thorough examination, and shared three dishes between two. After being brought up on Five Spice Calamari from Min Tanh II and Salt and Pepper Squid from Pacific House, the Sald and Pepper Calamari from Super Bowl was a little disappointing, but that was more than made up for by the other dishes. The pepper beef was sizzling.
The sauce was rich and the quality of meat surprising. The vegetable and bean curd hot pot was delicious, especially for those desert dwellers regularly deprived of fresh greens.
The staff were friendly, the other patrons happy and our first night in Fortitude Happy saw two happy eaters walk through the Brisbane Streets to prepare for the next morning's breakfast.
