the gunshop cafe is a home away from home for many; a relaxed environment filled with chatter and the enticing aromas of a busy kitchen. All our food is made with the best ingredients we can source from the markets and absolutely all our stocks and sauces are made on site. We are fabulously suited to cater to the growing number of special dietery requirements.
So begins the GunShop cafe's website. And who could doubt it.
As one walks to West End from the city/Southbank, the GunShop cafe appears around the corner. Just a sign. But like good cafes, the sign and the surrounds convey the feeling of homeliness that so attracts wandering foodies. After stopping in and admiring the vast range of deserts and the casual attitude of the staff and clientele, the GunShop cafe was pencilled in for the next morning's breakfast (the Rydges hotel breakfast was inadeqaute, and for $28.50 alarmingly expensive, even for a work expense).
15 hours later and we were standing in the GunShop cafe amongst a busy crowd waiting for a table and salivating over the dishes passing under our noses. Still full from Super Bowl, we were pleased to see the waiter for the morning had been eating at the same restaurant as us the night before, not that she had a clue who we were.
After some ensuing communicaiton difficulties, caused by the early start, we settled down with the menus. I started with a soy chai, which was fantastic. Breakfast was a toss up between the organic muesli with yoghurt, the poached quince french toast with organic yoghurt, the scrambled eggs with salmon and chives, the peas and mince on ciabatta with a poached egg, the stewed fruit with strawberry yoghurt or the simple eggs and bacon. Everything looked too fresh and far too delicious. And I was still so full.
Anyway, it was the poached quince french toast with organic yoghurt that got the nod as a 'light breakfast'. Although I ended up with a sizable portion of the salman and scrambled eggs. Both were incredible. On par with ici on Napier Street in Melbourne for quality ingredients, great environment and great food.
The next morning we returned, prepared. I tried the stewed fruit with yoghurt but sampled half of the mince on ciabatta. Brilliant. The place was packed. The atmosphere gorgeous and we will be returning to the GunShop cafe on our next Brisbane conference.
